The natural process of aging leads to skin losing its elasticity gradually over time. This results in wrinkles and sagging skin in various parts of our bodies, some areas more prominent than others. Sagging skin is quite apparent on our upper arms, where we tend to develop what are popularly known as “bat wings.” Any weight loss can also lead to the development or accentuation of bat wings.
In order to tone sagging upper arms caused due to excess loose skin, exercise is not enough. Exercise can reduce the fat, but the skin will still be loose due to loss of elasticity. Toned arms can be achieved through a body-contouring procedure called brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift. This procedure can produce great and lasting results.
An arm lift is a surgical procedure that eliminates excess drooping skin in the upper arm, reshaping the underarm region from the elbow upwards. The procedure involves tightening and smoothing out not just the skin but also the underlying tissue, helping to give proper definition to the upper-arm region. It also removes any excess stubborn fat through liposuction.
Well-defined and toned arms can help boost confidence and self-image. No longer will you have to feel self-conscious in form-fitting or short-sleeved clothes.
Arm lift procedures are performed as outpatient surgeries. The surgery takes around two to two and half hours, either under intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the surgeon’s recommendation. An incision is made along the underside of the arm where excess skin needs to be removed. This may be half the length of the upper arm or the full length, depending on the extent of the sagging skin. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat, if any.
After the fat and excess skin has been removed, the remaining skin is tightened to give firm and smooth contours to the arm. The incisions are then closed with sutures, on which a sterile dressing and a compression garment will be applied. Drains may be placed as well in order to remove excess blood and fluids.
Downtime after an arm lift is quite short, usually just a week or two. Bruising, tenderness, swelling, and redness are all normal and should disappear in a few days. If medication to help manage the pain is required, the surgeon can prescribe the appropriate type.
The compression garment should be worn for about four to six weeks. It will help decrease swelling and aid in contouring the new shape of the upper arms. Arm lift results will last for many years as long as you exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet; these should keep your weight stable and not fluctuating.
