BellaFill is a FDA approved collagen-based injectable for the treatment of certain types of acne scars. BellaFill adds instant volume to the scarred area, leveling the skin’s surface and smoothing it’s texture. BellaFill is composed of 80% Collagen Gel and 20% Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres.
The collagen is the smooth base of the filler which immediately adds volume to the depressed scar raising it to a level that’s even with the surrounding skin. Then, the PMMA microspheres form a supportive scaffold that helps support the growth of your body’s own natural collagen to supplant for long-lasting results. As the gel breaks down over time, your own collagen forms a foundation that adds volume, filling in the acne scars providing a sustained improvement that is long-lasting.
Truly a unique treatment for acne acar treatment, San Francisco BellaFill is safe and effective on all skin types, colors, and textures. Why is this unique? Most scarring treatments are not safe to use on darker skin tones (deep chemical peels and laser treatments) and others can become costly (years worth of laser, chemical peels, and makeup). BellaFill is safe, effective, and affordable. BellaFill is approved for use on men and women, 21 and older. It works on distensible and atrophic acne scars on the cheeks. Distensible scars smooth out when you tug on them, atrophic scars are pitted or depressed in the skin.
A pivotal, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of BellaFill for treating moderate to severe, atrophic, distensible facial acne scars on the cheek. Subjects were randomized to BellaFill vs. saline injections. BellaFill was found to be a safe and effective treatment when compared to Control treated subjects.
This study maintained a high threshold for success: the primary effectiveness endpoint defined a responder as a subject who had 50 percent or more of treated acne scars, improve by two or more points on a validated 4-point Acne Scar Rating Scale (ASRS). This six month endpoint was met with statistical significance and, as a secondary endpoint, continued to show improvement at nine and 12 months when assessed by the un-blinded investigator. Subjects blinded to treatment also reported successful outcomes and demonstrated improvement in their global appearance after treatment with BellaFill.
Both collagen and PMMA have established safety records and have been used in other areas of medicine, such as orthopedic surgery, dentistry, and ophthalmology. All patients must receive an allergy skin test 4 weeks prior to treatment (this is done in office 24 hours before treatment and administer to detect a potential allergy to the collagen or lidocaine). Most patients need/ use only 1 syringe for treatment.
Topical treatments, chemical peels, dermabrasion, microneedling, and laser resurfacing are among the current available treatment options for acne scars. However, some of these treatments may require significant downtime. In some cases, results can take time to emerge — and other treatments often lack rigorous, controlled data to support their safety or efficacy.
